THE POSITION

The Director of Golf reports directly to the General Manager and is part of the Senior Leadership Team. The person in this position will oversee all aspects of golf operations, including instruction, pro shop management, and member relations. This role requires a strong focus on enhancing the overall member experience while driving the golf department’s success. The Director is responsible for developing and executing a retail marketing plan to boost pro shop revenue and member satisfaction. This includes identifying and recommending amenities to enhance member retention. A key performance indicator will be the management of the retail operation’s profitability while simultaneously growing the golf business through increased usage, tournaments, and exceptional member engagement.

Golf Operations & Member Experience: Understanding golf course maintenance principles, work collaboratively with the Director of Property (Superintendent) to ensure course playability and aesthetics. Maintain practice facilities and identify any maintenance concerns promptly. Enforce golf course regulations and Rules of Golf. Includes a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks to member and employee safety.

Position Overview

Responsibilities and Expectations

Operations:

  • Possess the highest level of accountability for ensuring the golf operation is executing at a world-class level and be recognized as a leader in the Canadian golf industry.
  • Oversee and direct the day-to-day activities of the golf operations.
  • Implementation of policies and standard operating procedures; enforcing all rules and regulations established by the club.
  • Assist in communication to the members via publication of newsletters, website, informational and promotional materials and actively promote golf events at the club.
  • Onboard new members and acclimate them to club rules and regulations, assimilate them into group play, encourage event participation, and maintain handicap.
  • Create a playing schedule where all team members actively play golf with all segments of the membership.
  • Directly responsible for all staffing and training, human resources activities of the golf operations personnel.
  • Applies and administers the Club’s policies and by-laws in day-to-day operations.
  • Act as the staff liaison to the Club’s Captain and attend all relevant committee meetings.

 Financial:

  • Prepare and administer the annual budgets for golf operations.
  • Ensure the golf operation is compliant with all Club financial guidelines including purchasing, inventory, payroll, and fee schedules.
  • Responsible for preparing monthly reports for both the Captain’s Committee and General Manager
  • Review and report on P&L monthly golf operations, providing explanations on variances and forecasting.
  • Ultimately responsible for pro shop inventory and delivery of annual targets.

 Staffing:

  • Hire, train, and mentor a professional staff with a positive and service-oriented attitude
  • Develop personal career plans for each staff member; meet with them quarterly to review progress.
  • Conduct daily line-ups, weekly staff meetings and seasonal team retreats to ensure the vision of the club is clearly understood and member and guest experiences are consistent.

Tournament Programming:

  • Design, coordinate and successfully execute all golf events.
  • Assist in a Play Better golf program wherein the handicap of any player comes down following the system.

  • Communicate weekly rules tips and promote club events by engaging members on the practice range and first tee as well as through member outreach and club communication systems.

Instructional Programming:

  • Oversight of business and programming of the Ben Kern Learning Centre (indoor golf)

  • Assist in program design and offerings for: full senior members, intermediates, juniors and female spouses and daughters.
  • Conduct clinics and seminars to engage members and enhance programming.
  • Play golf with Members when appropriate.

  • Final approval on all merchandise and golf equipment purchases.
  • Develop partnerships with vendors who will invest and support the success of the golf shop.
  • Return demo product and defective merchandise in a timely manner and ensure proper credits and/or reimbursements are received.

The Director of Golf Position

The Director of Golf reports to the General Manager, coordinates with the Golf Committee Chair on a regular basis and implements the policies established by the Board of Directors as well as those in the Club’s bylaws. He/she develops operational policies, and is responsible for the creation and implementation of standard operating procedures for all areas.

The Director of Golf is the lead coordinator of programming and synergies among all golf programming, amenities and services. Driving excellence in the golf experience through training is a critical part of the position.

Candidate Qualifications

  • All candidates must be a Class “A” member in good standing with the PGA of America.
  • Experience as a current Head Golf Professional or Director of Golf; however current 1st Assistant Golf Professionals at well-recognized clubs, with verifiable records of achievement will also be considered.
  • A college degree from an accredited university or college is preferred.
  • Proven experience in budget development, fiscal management, strategic planning, and staff management.
  • Demonstrated strong command of written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Maintain a credible golf game and remain current on teaching innovations.
  • Experienced and can apply the latest technology in all applications of the golf operation.
  • Proficient in point-of-sale software, Microsoft Word, Excel, Golf Genius, etc…

Marine Drive Golf Club (“MDGC” or the “Club”) is one of Canada’s most prestigious and historic private golf clubs, situated in the heart of Vancouver and boasting a diverse membership of 1,300 resident and non-resident enthusiasts. Founded in 1922, MDGC combines the heritage of a top-rated golf course on the shores of the Fraser River with a stately clubhouse for member services, dining and events. The Club and course have been central to Canadian amateur golf for 100 years. MDGC’s Junior Development Program is widely recognized for the quality players it cultivates from its over 125 young players. The Position

The Position

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver an outstanding member experience and service commensurate with member expectations and in keeping with a premier Tier 1 private golf and country club.

  • Coordinate plans with the Food and Beverage Manager for all on-course food and beverage, banquets, outside events, and catering for all golf functions.

The Director of Golf Course Position

The Director of Golf Course reports to the General Manager/COO and coordinates with the Greens Committee Chair on a regular basis. The Director of Golf Course implements the policies established by the Board of Directors and the Club’s bylaws. He/she develops operational policies and is responsible for the creation and implementation of standard operating procedures for all areas.

The Director of Golf Course is the lead catalyst for driving excellence in the golf experience and establishing standards for agronomic practices are critical part of the position. The Director of Golf must facilitate an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communication and respect for themselves, members, guests and the property.

Primary Duties

 

  • Responsible for all phases of Golf Course Maintenance and Agronomic operations and related personnel.
  • Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Head Golf Professional on any issues related to golf course maintenance.

  • 2-year Degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, like agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science).
  • Advanced computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations, including use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America is preferred.

The Golf Facilities:

Designed in 1960 by Canadian Golf Hall of Fame architect Robbie Robinson, and renovated by renowned course designer Doug Carrick, the Bayview Golf and Country Club course consistently ranks among Score Magazine’s Top 100 courses in Canada. Golfers enjoy a stunning course that is equally challenging for both the recreational and scratch golfer. Bayview’s renowned golf course is world-class and can truly be appreciated by the whole family. A comprehensive practice facility, golf simulators and well-stocked, full-service Pro Shop round out the Club’s facilities. The Club has hosted several professional and amateur championships.

The Position:

Bayview is seeking a well-qualified, dynamic individual to oversee and manage Bayview’s golf operations and work cooperatively with other departments to provide an exceptional member and guest experience.

The Head Golf Professional will be responsible for the following:

 

  • Develop and deliver a consistently outstanding member experience commensurate with specified member expectations and in keeping with a premier Tier 1 private golf and country club. Although the Head Professional will rely on the Staff to operate the daily activities, the Head Professional will be responsible for overall performance metrics and service.
  • Recruitment, training, development, performance management and leadership of Golf Operations staff.
  • Preparation of the Golf Operations operating and capital budgets.
  • Work with the Golf Operations staff, management team and various member committees, to develop and implement merchandising programs, club tournaments, leagues, coaching and lesson programs and outside events.
  • Purchasing, merchandising, sales and marketing, inventory management, and financial performance of all aspects of the Pro Shop.
  • Oversight of the golf reservation system, starting procedures, tracking and monitoring play on the golf course.
  • Representation of the Club to members, staff and external agencies. The Head Professional is engaged in new member recruitment.

Candidate Profile:

The Head Professional reports to the General Manager. Given the leading role this individual will play in achieving the strategic objectives of Bayview, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience and attributes:

 

  • Class A member of the PGA of Canada with Head Professional experience preferred.
  • A dynamic leader with the ability to maintain a strong team by motivation and leading by example. Has the ability to provide direction and expectations, performance feedback and recognition that leads to positive outcomes. Excellent communication skills.
  • Highly visible leader with friendly and outgoing personality and focus on member service. A leadership style that lends itself to being the ‘face of the golf experience’.
  • An out of the box thinker determined to be innovative in the modern world of golf operations.
  • An ability to work collaboratively with the active volunteer base at the club to achieve results.
  • An understanding of a private member-owned club culture.
  • A demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of the Professional Shop retail business.
  • Proficient instructor well versed in the latest club fitting and teaching technologies.
  • Proven leadership, management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to organize and oversee annual golf event fixtures and programs including participation in the internal marketing and administration of the events and programs.
  • Ability to implement, enforce and maintain all policies, programs and plans as established and communicated through the General Manager.
  • Ability to market, schedule and manage any external competitions and events.
  • Provide support for prospective member sales, new member integration and membership retention programs.
  • Maintain and promote a well-respected and professional image within the Club, the industry and community.
  • A keen interest in continuous learning and professional development in the industry.
  • A self-starter and results oriented work style combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all the Club’s stakeholders.

Note: The current Head Golf Professional will leave the Club on January 29, 2021.

The Club will offer an attractive year-round compensation package, commensurate with experience, which will include a competitive base salary and benefits.
